I wanted to give a quick rundown on what is happening in case people had questions.
We’ve had a test run of our new system at SCMC. One of the biggest hurdles we had with checking people in seemed to be names. DOB’s were always clear and easy to read as well as easy to communicate our expectations for. People often don’t use their government given name in this community, and states change the location and order of the information enough to complicate the process.
We also talked to other event organizers who had interest in the system but wanted more security frontloaded into it. The solution we came up with was to accept lower identity authentication for the trade off in privacy and breach protection. We cant lose data we don’t have to hackers.
So, why are you required to re-register? We have always taken pride in storing our information securely and we have no ability to recover your DOB from our existing hashes. It was stored combined with the partial of your name as well as a personal salt using a very strong algorithm. Our only option is to erase these hashes and allow you to create new ones by registering again and re-entering your DOB.
